The Shadow Ledger What You Owe the Dark

“In this city, you can pawn your shadow. His mother pawned hers for him.”

Your combat partner is your shadow. Your first target is a debt you refuse to collect.

Ren Ito retrieves runaway shadows for the Registry Houses of Sable City. Then the order arrives with his mother’s name on it. He refuses, breaks his contract, and becomes the city’s most wanted retriever.

The story

A debt written in darkness

At Sable City’s dusk, every citizen casts a long shadow. The Registry turned that simple fact into an economy: shadows can secure money, luck, or a memory someone wants to forget.

People who lose their shadows fade in stages: first their colors, then their memories, then their name. Ren’s mother is already fading. Her pawn gave him the hand-sewn shadow he has walked with since childhood.

01

The bargain

Lina Ito pawned her own shadow so her son could live with one made for him. The Registry never forgets a founding pawn.

02

The refusal

When the House advances Lina’s deadline, Ren is ordered to collect her. He refuses and runs, carrying a shadow the Registry considers priceless.

03

The reckoning

Ren has one season to undo the bargain before the centennial Grand Settlement, when the First Broker intends to call in every shadow in the city.

Characters

Two people. One missing shadow.

The hero was born without one. The villain has spent a century trying to rule the system that took hers.

The retriever

Ren Ito, 20

Ren knows every rule of the Registry because he enforced them. His weapon is the Retriever’s Hook, an oversized tailor’s needle that can sew an enemy’s shadow to the ground.

  • Want: redeem his mother’s shadow before she fades completely.
  • Flaw: as a child, he pawned one painful memory and no longer knows what he sold.
  • Partner: the hand-sewn shadow his mother made possible.
Madame Zora Vex in the Counting House, wearing a living mantle of stolen shadows

First Broker of the Registry

Madame Zora Vex

Collectors took Zora’s shadow when she was seven, for her father’s debts. She grew up inside the shame of that loss, climbed the House rank by rank, and now owns the ledgers that own everyone else.

  • Belief: “A shadow is the only honest currency.”
  • Power: the Mantle of One Hundred Names, woven from stolen shadows.
  • Look closely: lantern light draws every shadow in the room except hers. Zora casts none.

Lina Ito

Ren’s mother, lucid in flashes as the Registry’s deadline approaches. Her good days are the game’s emotional countdown.

Nix

A free shadow with no owner: quick, funny, loyal, and the only person the light cannot hurt.

Father Anselme

A pawn-priest who secretly burns the debt notes of the poor and keeps books the Registry believes destroyed.

The world

Sable City at permanent dusk

Free a shadow and a street gets its colors back. Let a deadline fall and the same street turns flat, grey, and silent.

The Pawn Market of Sable City at dusk, with jars of darkness, lantern light, upright citizens with shadows, and grey citizens without them
The Pawn Market. Darkness is sold by the jar, luck changes hands, and the people who still own shadows stand upright.
Act I

The Pawn Market

Ren’s working ground, where almost anything can be sold, including a child’s laughter.

Act I

Streets Without Lamps

The grey district of near deadlines, home to citizens who are beginning to fade.

Act II

The Shadow Vault

The Registry’s bank-dungeon, where confiscated darkness is filed under names.

Act III

The Mirror Courts

Tribunals where reflections testify against the people who cast them.

Act IV

The Stitching Workshop

Sister Loom’s factory, where stolen shadows are sewn onto empty shells.

Act V

The House of Accounts

Zora Vex’s tower and the arena of the final battle.

The signature gesture

Stitch & Snap

One thumb guides Ren. The other guides his shadow. Together, they turn position into a weapon.

1

Move as two

Ren stays on safe ground while his shadow crosses gaps, grates, and pools of collection light that he cannot enter.

2

Stitch the shadow

Trace a line between your shadow and an enemy’s shadow to pin it to the lit ground.

3

Snap the body

Strike while the enemy is exposed. Cut threads, free captive shadows, and turn the terrain back toward color.

4

Swap places

Exchange positions with your shadow to cross a deadly pool of light or escape a closing trap.

Media

Watch the world move

Both films are concept previsualizations made from the game’s official character art. They set tone and staging; they are not final gameplay footage.

Combat concept

Ren and his shadow fight in choreography: stitch an enemy down, then snap the exposed body.

Zora Vex enters

The First Broker crosses the Counting House as her mantle of stolen shadows opens around her.

Sound and cinematics

Scored like a story

The original score gives Ren a two-part theme: a lone cello answered one phrase later by its shadow. Zora’s theme begins immaculate and loses an instrument with every act, while freed districts regain their instruments for good.

Cinematics are staged inside the world of the game, built to carry the bargains, refusals, and confrontations that systems alone cannot say.
